What a amazing way to start the journey -- bumping into this guy, Doug Shafer. Shafer is a Portland, Oregon musician and artist. His band, The Smut City Jellyroll Society, is a wild and crazy bunch of fun loving musicians playing blues and early jazz from the 1920’s and 1930’s.

In addition to playing music and teaching, Shafer is an exhibiting visual artist, a career that begin in the 1980s. He has also mastered the art of bookbinding and he crafts and sells the musical instrument, the Bambazoo, made from bamboo harvested from his yard.
